Backups on WhatsApp: what they are, what limits they have and how to do them on Android and iOS

We are going to explain everything you need to know about WhatsApp backups, so that you know the attention you should pay to such an important element.

On these copies it depends that if you change your mobile or reset yours, you can recover all the conversations and data that you have shared over time in the application.

Let's start by explaining what exactly WhatsApp backups are. Then we will go on to tell you where they are saved and what limits they have, since you will not always be able to restore them, and we will finish explaining step by step how to make and configure them on Android and iOS.

What are WhatsApp backups?

Over time, the more we use a messaging application, the more content we accumulate. And the content is not only the conversations themselves, but also all the photos, videos, or other files that we may have exchanged. If you want to have an example, we have already explained how to look at the space that your conversations occupy in case you want to free it.

The problem with this accumulated content is that you could lose it if you change your mobile or reset the one you have, and that can be somewhat painful. This is where backups come in to avoid disaster and you lose all conversations.

Backups are an exact copy of all your conversations as they are and their content as they are at the time you make them. All photos, videos, shared files, and texts are saved.

But since what you share or write later is not saved, it is recommended to make the copies on a recurring basis to always have the maximum amount of data stored.

In this way, if you then change your mobile or reset your device, you can recover the backup and all your conversations so that everything is as it was before.

Therefore, when you are going to restore devices, it is highly recommended that you make a backup of the entire mobile device beforehand, including WhatsApp conversations as they are before restoring.

WhatsApp will allow you various types of options when configuring your backups. They can be automatic and can be done alone every day, every week or monthly.

You can also deactivate the automatic copies so that they are only made when you make them manually, and you can always choose whether to save the videos in addition to the rest of the files or not, since the videos tend to have a greater weight and may not fit everything if you have a free iCloud or Drive account.

Where the backups are kept?

Facebook does not store WhatsApp backups on its own servers, but delegates to others. Specifically, the copies are saved on the servers of Google or Apple depending on whether you have an Android or iOS mobile.

If you have an Android mobile, the backup will be saved directly to Google Drive, Google's cloud storage service. And if you have an iPhone, the copy is saved in iCloud, Apple's storage service. Therefore, the privacy of the data depends on these external services and their security, except in the transmission when making the copies, since it is not encrypted from end to end.

This also means that your WhatsApp data will be subject to your Google or Apple accounts, since it is their storage services that you are using. The Google or Apple accounts that you have linked on your mobile device will be used, and in the event that you have more than one number in the same account, the phone number will also be used to identify them within.

Sometimes copies cannot be recovered

This way of making the backups that we have told you has some important limits that you should know, since there will be cases in which you cannot recover a backup copy and there is nothing that you are going to be able to do to avoid it. And all for that specific aspect, that of saving the copies in a specific Google Drive or iCloud account.

Even if you use the same phone number, if you log into a mobile with a different account, you will not be able to recover the backup. WhatsApp will have access to the current account you have on this mobile, and therefore not to the other one that you used in the previous one and where you had the backup.

The same happens if you change the operating system. If you go from Android to iOS or vice versa you will lose the backups, and you will have no way to recover them. This is because WhatsApp will detect on your phone that it is you, but your backups are in different clouds and you cannot export those from one site to another.

In the Android version of WhatsApp, there is an option that allows you to choose in which Google Drive account to store the backup. This is not valid to restore the data, since WhatsApp only allows you to do it the first time you turn it on, but on the previous mobile you can make a last copy in the new Google account that you are going to use in the new one, and in that case then you can restore it.

How to backup WhatsApp?

Next, we will explain how to make or configure a WhatsApp backup. We are going to divide this section into two parts, explaining the entire process to you first on Android, and doing the same later on iOS.

How to backup WhatsApp on Android?

In Android, what you have to do is enter WhatsApp and click on the button of the three points that you have at the top right to display the options menu. In this menu, now click on the Settings option at the end to go to the application settings.

Once you enter the settings, now you have to click on the Chats section that will appear second, and that is the site where you can configure everything related to your conversations in the messaging application.

Within the Chats section, you have to go down under the Chat Settings section, where you must click on the Backup option that will appear with the icon of a cloud. This will take you to the menu where you can control everything related to these backups.

And once you enter the backup options section, you can make a manual copy at this time or configure the automatic ones with different parameters. Next we will tell you the options that you can find in this window.

1. Last copy: It informs you when the last backup of WhatsApp was made, its weight, and you have a Save button to make a new copy at this time.
2. Save to Google Drive: You can choose how often you will save the automatic backup on Google Drive. It can be daily, weekly, monthly, only by pressing the Save button or never.
3. Google account: You choose the Google account where the copy will be saved. This only serves to save it, you cannot choose to import it from another Google account.
4. Save using: You can choose to make the copies only when you have a WiFi connection to avoid extra charges, or to also use the Internet connection of your mobile rate.

Although it did not appear in the screenshot above, there is also a last option to decide if you want to include the videos in your backup. These usually take up a lot of space, that is, WhatsApp allows you not to include them in the copies so as not to waste the limited storage of the free Google Drive accounts.

Of all the options, the most important is to choose well the frequency with which you want to make the backups. The recommended for most would be to do them daily to avoid losing conversations before any specific error that your mobile may have and cause you to restart it, from failures or breaks to thefts or losses. Better to always have the copies up to date, and resort to manual copying only when you are going to deliberately make a change on the phone right after.

How to backup WhatsApp on iOS

In iOS, the first thing you have to do is enter WhatsApp, and then click on the Configuration section you have in the lower options bar to enter the application settings.

Once you enter the settings, now you have to click on the Chats section that will appear in the second block of options, and that is the site where you can configure some settings related to conversations.

Within the Chats settings, now you have to click on the Backup option that you will see in third place, just below the option to save all the photos you receive in your gallery.

And once you enter the backup options section, you can make a manual copy at this time or configure the automatic ones with different parameters. Next we will tell you the options that you can find in this window.

1. Make copy now: It appears below the box that tells you when the last WhatsApp backup was made and its weight. If you click on Make copy now you will make a new backup at this time.
2. Automatic copy: You can choose how often you will save the automatic backup in iCloud. It can be daily, weekly, monthly or never to be done only manually
3. Include videos: It allows you to decide if you want to include the videos in your backup. These usually take up a lot of space, that is, WhatsApp allows you not to include them in the copies so as not to waste the limited storage of the free iCloud accounts.
